Wounds, debris, and shrapnel

Shrapnel is a source of heavy damage for people who are in the area of shrapnel weapon explosion: multiple deep wounds, damage of the soft tissues and bone fragmentation, and heavy bleeding, which make shrapnel patients difficult to manage.

Shrapnel and mines are the typical cause of multiple traumas and severe injuries of civilians as well as of military personnel. The number of shrapnel casualties among civilians near the frontline and in de-occupied regions is incredibly high.

Vacuum-assisted closure therapy (VAC) is used for shrapnel trauma. Enough VAC equipment was and still is a big challenge, due to the large number of patients with wounds, high expenses, and long periods of treatment (one machine works for 1-3 months during the treatment course for only one patient).

The pieces of the rocket were found on the balcony of the Neonatal surgery Department in the children’s hospital OHMATDYT after the shelling of Kyiv. The windows of the childcare unit have been destroyed because of the blast wave. A lot of rocket pieces were found close to the hospital. Fortunately, there were no casualties on the territory of OHMATDYT.
