As a result of active hostilities in Mariupol, Ilya Matvienko lost both of his parents. Ilya suffered from injuries of varying severity. The Russian occupiers kidnapped him and took to a territory which is not controlled by Ukraine.
The return of the child was made possible by the systematic and coordinated work of all Ukrainian relevant authorities. Now he is taken care of by his grandparents and doctors.

From the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Ilya and his mother lived in the basement. One day after the massive shelling Ilya’s leg was injured and his mother suffered a head injury. Mother died in the arms of her son. The next day the Russian military forcibly took Ilya, whose leg was fragmented to pieces, to occupied Novoazovsk, and from there – to Donetsk.
Ilya’s grandmother in Ukraine was looking for all possible ways to get her grandson back. She got custody of the boy and crossed the borders of the four countries to take Ilya back to her.
